Long-time market sage and host of the PBS series Wall Street Weak died yesterday.
I have been watching Mr Rukeyser for longer than I can remember, and was intensely put off (as was many of my colleagues) when PBS bagged him and his good-humored and always entertaining show for a bunch of suited x-rays.
Louis Rukeyser had a way of explaining markets and business that left his viewers smarter for having watched him. At times he could be a blue-skies optimist, missing market dangers, but I believe he was that way because he believed in free markets and in America's leadership in using markets to better the lives of people.
In a way, he was Ronald Reagan with white hair and a better business sense, but his unbounded optimism was refreshing. His show was like a Friday night cocktail party, and was always over too soon. And so is he.
Mr Rukeyser was 73.
