House Republicans showed themselves capable of the same level of demagoguery as their Democratic counterparts by pushing through a provision to block the Dubai Ports deal. Meanwhile, Bush will sign a renewed USA PATRIOT ACT into law after that execrable federal power grab was approved by Congress.
The shame of these two pieces of legislation is that neither will do much, if anything at all, to somehow make Americans safe, or safer. It may not seem as if these two items are related, but they are. The first is a political move to keep the Democrats from going to the right of the GOP and an effort to punish DPW for our failure to secure ports of entry. The second is a cynical play on the understandable fears of the populace to put in place greater restrictions that have nothing to do with terrorism.
Look here. While it is a mistake to assume that all provisions are at the base sinister, it isn't all that of a stretch to see incompetence mixed in with a lust for governmental prerogatives. This is the farmer jamming his chickens into a coop instead of going out and shooting the fox. The fox is laughing, laughing.
