Just when you think that the Europeans have awakened from their long slumber, the EU sets about siding with those who would riot over cartoons versus their own citizens:
The Euorpean Union may try to draw up a media code of conduct to avoid a repeat of the furor caused by the publication across Europe of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, an EU commissioner said on Thursday.
In an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph, EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini said the charter would encourage the media to show "prudence" when covering religion.
"The press will give the Muslim world the message: We are aware of the consequences of exercising the right of free expression," he told the newspaper. "We can and we are ready to self-regulate that right."
If that isn't one of the most craven statements you have heard, I don't know what is.
Fortunately for Mr Frattini, he has friends in the terror group Hezbollah, whose leader
heartily agrees with the EU commissioner on free speech:
A Hezbollah leader has told U.S. President George Bush to shut up over the Mohammed cartoons dispute and urged Muslims to continue their angry protest.
"We'll defend our prophet not just with our voices but with our blood," Hassan Nasrallah said. "Muslims must continue to demonstrate until an apology is made."
Responding to U.S. charges that Syria and Iran organized the protests, Ynet reported, he told Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to "Shut their mouths!"
"The defense of the prophet must continue around the world," he said. "Condoleezza Rice and Bush and all of the other despots should shut their mouths. We the Islamic ummah (Muslim nation) cannot tolerate in silence or show flexibility when they insult the prophet and our holy values."
All that hope that Europe had found a spine has more or less dried up.

Report I read: "... Kofi Annan was blunt in saying that freedom of speech is never ABSOLUTE, because it entailed responsibility and good judgement."
EU is just following the UN lead, I guess. I've heard that expression "freedom of speech is never absolute" used by officials in various countries in Mideast and SE Asia.
I expect the street has a new theme song now: "We've only just begun."
The EU is in for more to come. But with open borders and France's 20 per cent Muslim population...I guess everyone is fearing the next car torch will be outside their door.
Of course, Bush is a cowboy.

Yeah, I suspect that the Eu is looking at the news reports and seeing more and more protests. They're afraid that there will be no end to them so they're going after a portion of the populace they know is unlikely to put up a stink.
If we see a return to the riots in Paris of a few months ago, it will be seen as a fault of the papers that have published the cartoons, rather than those who are doing the rioting.

They're not very good "parents", are they? No one must have explained the concept of tough love.
But, no doubt, that's what caused the end of the colonization policy...the children just misbehaved.
Now, however, the children are living "at home".
