The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted the nomination of John Roberts to be the next Chief Justice of the United States out of committee with a 13-5 vote for confirmation.
The vote breaks out this way:
FOR:
Specter (C) R-PA
Hatch R-UT
Grassley R-IOWA
Kyl R-AZ
DeWine R-OH
Sessions R-AL
Graham R-SC
Cornyn R-TX
Brownback R-KS
Coburn R-OK
Leahy (RM) D-VT
Kohl D-WI
Feingold D-WI
AGAINST:
Kennedy D-MA
Biden D-DE
Feinstein D-CA
Schumer D-NY
Durbin D-IL
The Democratic leadership has said that they will not mount a filibuster and it seems that Roberts will have at least 60 votes. With the three Democrats from the committee, along with Max Baucus (MT), Tim Johnson (SD) and Ben Nelson (NE) the Republicans can lose Lincoln Chaffey and still have plenty of votes.
The final vote will be interesting to watch.
