It's slowly becoming evident that the Democratic leadership is overplaying their hand in going after Karl Rove before the whole story about the Plame/Wilson/Novak dustup comes to light. Even the Washington Post is leaning that way now.
But much is still unknown, and Democratic demands that Mr. Rove be fired immediately seem premature given the murky state of the evidence. While we await more facts, it's worth remembering some from the previous episodes of this strange story -- including a few that have been mangled or forgotten.
Sensible, no? I suspect, and I can only suspect because my own security clearance level is just above that of the rats that congregate beside the CIA cafeteria dumpster, that Charles Schumer and Harry Reid know that there is not likely to be much to bite into when Patrick Fitzgerald finishes his investigation. So what they need to do is trot out Joe Wilson again to try and force Rove's censure or firing before hand. But I don't think that Rove is going anywhere now, especially since it seems that Rove got his information from Bob Novak, and not the other way around.
Meanwhile, it's helpful to remember that Joe Wilson's claims of whistle blower status was debunked by the Butler Commission report. It's also important for the Bush people to remember that what usually kicks up the dirt in Washington is more the lying about a problem than the problem itself. If you get a chance, either watch or Tivo the daily Scott McClellan presser at the White House. Each briefing has taken on the quality of the undercard at the local dog fights where they let a chicken loose in the ring to get the pit bulls riled up. An good old Scott just stares and stutters and dreams of joining Ari Fleischer on the book circuit.
I miss the good old days when the country was united. When everybody's every day was consumed with speculation about presidential sex-no sex. Those were the days.

The word you want is "rabid". And the folks way, way, way out in front on this red herring will be way, way, way out in front on the next red herring. Right or wrong doesn't matter. What matters is to be way, way, way...
