Giacomo places third after a poor start. Afleet Alex wins The Preakness in dramatic fashion, going down to his knees in the last turn as Scrappy T veers out in front of him, only to win going away. A heart-stopping moment and a fine finish. How that horse stayed up and the jockey stayed on is a wonder.
I didn't have the trifecta, by the way.
With a slightly less eventful trip in the Derby for Afleet Alex, we'd be looking at the prospect of a Triple Crown winner right now. But I suppose there are no uneventful trips in 20 horse fields. In any case, Alex is a grand little horse of rare qualities, and his human connections are easy to like too. Run, Alex, run!
