There are reports of some violence in and around some polling places in Iraq, but Reuters is reporting a turnout of 72%. This seems like a big deal to me. Some stories here, here (hold your nose - this is Reuters), here and here.
So far I am encouraged by the relatively (to many expectations) small impact of attacks. We have about an hour to go until polls close (5:00PM Baghdad time - 9:00AM EST).
Now of course, those who have been saying that the elections would be a failure will now shift their focus and claim that the big test is now what happens after the elections are over - that the real test is what happens now - the US has to get out no - how can the government operate under such oppressive American military presence? - there will be more and larger terror attacks coming - how can you count on a ballot count as long as the evil Americans are hanging around with guns? - waa, waa, waaaaaaa.
